Level III also has a published ten-year average: 51% (as of the February 2026 release). It is the only ten-year figure in the sources — the Level I release says the latest rate was above its ten-year average but gives no number.

Deferral is not a retake

A deferral moves your registration to a later window before you ever sit; a retake happens after a fail. The “after at least one deferral” column above covers candidates who postponed and then sat — the group is not the same as “retakers”.

The gap between first-time and deferred rates is wide at every level. That is an association in the published figures, not proof that deferring causes failing. The releases do not say why the groups differ, and we do not guess.

How to read these numbers

“All candidates” is everyone who sat that level in that window, first-time candidates and candidates who had deferred together. The first-time figure is higher because that group is different, not because the exam changed.

Each level is its own exam with its own window and release date. A Level I rate from August is not comparable with a Level III rate from February, and we never blend them into one CFA-wide rate.

The number of candidates matters as much as the percentage: 28,145 sat Level I in August 2026, 11,269 sat Level III in February 2026. We always show the count beside the rate.

The Level III ten-year average is context, not a target. CFA Institute publishes it alongside Level III results, and we show it only where it exists. A group rate describes past candidates, not your chances.

Questions

What is the CFA Level III pass rate?
The most recent Level III result is the February 2026 window: 50% of 11,269 candidates passed, with 59% for first-time candidates and 34% for candidates who had deferred at least once. CFA Institute also publishes a ten-year average of 51% for Level III. Results for the August 2026 exam are due Oct 20, 2026, and this page is re-checked that day.
Is deferring the same as retaking?
No. A deferral moves your exam to a later window before you sit it; a retake comes after a fail. CFA Institute reports candidates who deferred at least once as their own group.
Does deferring cause a lower pass rate?
The figures show an association, not a cause. Candidates who deferred at least once passed at a lower rate than first-time candidates at every level, but the releases do not say why, and we do not guess.
Do these rates tell me my chances of passing?
No. They describe groups of candidates who already sat each exam. They cannot account for your preparation or your test day.
