What the official body does not publish

  • A national CPA Exam total cost — the exam has no single nationwide price.
  • A state-by-state fee table from AICPA or NASBA — each state board page carries its own numbers, which is why this calculator totals only the two states verified fee-by-fee.

What changed

  • Oct 8, 2026

California's Exam FAQs page carried this 'last updated' stamp when checked; the fee amounts were unchanged at that update.

  • Jan 15, 2027

Next scheduled full re-check of both fee pages, and whenever NASBA announces a section-fee change.

How to read these numbers

Two kinds of fee stack up: your state board's application fees and the per-section exam fees collected through NASBA. In Tennessee, each section application also carries its own application fee, so retakes cost more than the section fee alone.

The calculator never estimates: pick “Another state” and it shows you the official links instead of a number. Guessing a state's application fee would be exactly the stale-table problem this page exists to fix.

Questions

How much does the CPA Exam cost in my state?
Application fees and rules are set by each state board, and the national section fee is collected through NASBA. This page totals California and Tennessee only — those are the states we verified fee-by-fee against the official pages. For any other state, use the NASBA links below; we deliberately show no subtotal for states we have not checked.
Is there one national CPA Exam price?
No. The per-section exam fee is collected through NASBA, but application and reapplication fees come from your state board and differ. No official body publishes a national total or a state-by-state fee table.
What does a retake cost?
Each section attempt pays the section fee again. In Tennessee each attempt also pays the exam application fee again — one section per application. In California, re-selecting sections after an application expires means a reapplication fee.
Do these totals include a review course or licensing?
No. The calculator and the worked totals are exam fees only — they exclude review courses, the ethics exam, licensing and international testing.
How current are these fees?
Verified by hand on Oct 13, 2026: California's Exam FAQs page was last updated Oct 8, 2026, and neither fee page states when its current fees took effect. Next scheduled check: Jan 15, 2027.
